I came to business analysis from building — five years writing Python and running servers before I ever wrote a requirement. It means I can work out what's actually needed, stay close enough to the implementation to know when the answer is wrong, and do the mapping and migration work myself rather than specifying it for someone else.

These days that's enterprise integration and migration. Off the clock it's a self-hosted environment: same instinct, fewer stakeholders, more questionable late-night decisions. Mostly I want to understand things below the glossy abstraction layer.
